A New Blog to Compliment a New Page

     I recently started a Facebook page with the same name. The goal of it and this blog is to be a local resource of Environmental Education for everyone. By highlighting local species, places and by showing activism, I hope to encourage you to learn more about our natural surroundings. The more who know and care about what we have, the more that are likely to speak up to preserve what we have for future generations. Clarendon County is an amazing place that has the potential to be much more for everyone. I hope to demonstrate this with my posts and through my actions. If you would like to see the things that I see and possibly learn a little more about the amazing diversity we have here, please follow this blog. I am not sure how often I will post, but I know I will at least be doing one post a week. 

    I will be starting with a project I began last week, which I am realizing will take much longer than I originally thought. It will be about my clean-up efforts at Hickory Top Wildlife Management Area. The blog will allow me to go much more in-depth and show you a little more than what will fit in a Facebook post. If you do become a reader, I hope you enjoy. Feel free to post questions on here or on the Facebook Page. Just know I will not be responding to general comments, only questions. I have dealt with harassment over the past couple years because there are certain individuals who do not want me doing what I plan to with this blog. I do also want this to be inspiring and encouraging not just on environmental topics, but in general. If you are doing something for the right reasons, don't let anyone get in your way, push through and accomplish your goals.

Hickory Top WMA Clean-up 15-May-2026

          The goal for this clean-up was just one bag. I was walking in about a half mile and picking up where I had left off on the rainy day clean-up on May 2nd. The trail in was shaded I could hear Cedar Waxwings, which I would see feeding on blueberries on my way out. That was the wildlife highlight and by that point I had my camera packed away. So this day and this post are pretty much going to be all trash.        Down by the lake I started searching. I walked through the area I had done on May 2nd and found a couple spots like this one that I had missed. To get everything, you really have to walk through multiple times.          The start was pretty sparse. One item here, a couple others there, but no big trash deposits. I wasn't alone this time. Hickory Top WMA Rainy Day Clean-up 2-May-2026

          Most people would probably not go out in the pouring rain to do a clean-up. I decided to and am very happy I did. When was the last time you spent time in the pouring rain? To me this ended up bringing back a lot of good memories and the rain made this clean-up exceptionally enjoyable. I started at the second access that ends in a parking lot. Made sure to have an orange vest on as there was one more day after this one of Turkey season, then walked the access roads down to the lake shore. It is short hike in, but because of walk I did decide to just have one full bag of trash removed for the goal.        I am not sure why, but the gate was open. If you access this area, you do have to park to the right of this and the access roads are not open to the public for driving. This is also a Palmetto Trail Access.          From what I have seen the DNR and Santee Cooper keep the access roads very well maintain...

Hickory Top WMA Clean-up 14-April-2026

       On April 14th it was back to Hickory Top Wildlife Management Area. This time it was going to be a more enjoyable clean-up. I love being out on the water and going this route turns a chore into something fun. I was still trying to formulate a plan, which at this point I don't think I will be coming up with. This task is just going to be repetition and continually doing clean-ups like this to get as much of Hickory Top done as possible. I could start at one end and work my way down the shore to the other, but due to limited access points this isn't really possible.        This like the previous day would give me an idea of access points for the shore along the lake. Much of this area is a Cypress-tupelo edge and there are only limited spots where I can paddle through the trees. Water depth also will play a role in future clean-ups here.
